It's easier than I'm generally happy with to add a port group, and pull your vmkernel offline in the process. Alternatively, the IP address may be broken/incorrect in some way.
I would suggest getting to the command line and checking that out. Given the server is unpingable, but your VMs are up and running, that's the most likely scenario.
